The UNIX-HATERS Handbook is a semi-humorous edited compilation of messages to the UNIX-HATERS mailing list. The book was edited by Simson Garfinkel, Daniel Weise and Steven Strassmann and published in 1994. The book was made available to download for free in electronic format in 2003.

The book concerns the frustrations of users to the Unix operating system. Many users had come from systems that they felt were far more sophisticated in computer science terms, and were tremendously frustrated by the worse is better design philosophy that they felt Unix and much of its software encapsulated.

This book was printed as a trade paperback. Its front cover was designed to be similar to The Scream. An air sickness bag, printed with the phrase "UNIX barf bag", was inserted into the inside back cover of every copy, by the publisher.

The Old Man and the Sea

Ernest Hemingway, 1952

The Old Man and the Sea is a novella by Ernest Hemingway written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Though it has been the subject of disparate criticism, it is noteworthy in twentieth century fiction and in Hemingway's canon, reaffirming his worldwide literary prominence and significant in his selection for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Hemingway is one of the 20th century's most famous American writers. His books include The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Hemingway's plainspoken no-frills writing style became so famous that it was (and is) frequently parodied. His dashing machismo was almost as famous as his writing: he lived in Paris, Cuba and Key West, fancied bullfighting and big game hunting, and served as a war correspondent in WWII and the Spanish Civil War. He sealed his own notoriety when he killed himself with a shotgun in 1961.

Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954... Hemingway is sometimes called by his familiar nickname "Papa"... His birthdate is sometimes listed in error as 1898. According to a 1954 article in the New York Times, "In most reference books and in his own conversation he is one year older because he gave 1898 as his birth date when he tried to enlist [in the army] early in 1917, and stuck to that date ever since"... Hemingway's father also committed suicide, shooting himself with a Civil War pistol in 1928.

Pratt and Matthews follow their successful SuperFoods Rx by laying out a yearlong health program based on a diet incorporating the first book's 14 "best foods" plus additions like dark chocolate and kiwis, as well as lots of exercise, adequate sleep and other healthy habits. For each season, they describe proven benefits of foods in abundance then and provide recipes combining them; they also focus throughout on specific concerns like diabetes, portion control and stress.

Readers may occasionally struggle with dietary jargon that isn't always well explained (e.g., "phytochemicals" and "cryptoxanthins"), and those new to the SuperFood way might be overwhelmed by the amount of certain foods they're supposed to eat (a cup or two of blueberries per day in summer; one-half to one cup of broccoli daily in autumn), but the advice is sensible and the authors make no incredible claims. The recipes, mostly simple, range from breakfast items to light entrees to desserts and show ways the book's recommendations can be put into practice. Many times, people ask me if I have an exciting job as a "criminal profiler" or if I dissect dead people. The answer to both questions is "No!" I am a forensic psychologist in Knoxville, Tennessee who specializes in kids (and adults) who are violent. The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) defines the field of forensic psychology as "The application of the science and profession of law to questions and issues relating to psychology and the legal system." Ok, so my job is exciting (at least I think so) but I deal with live people who have very severe problems with anger and feelings of aggression. I mostly do psychological evaluations that involve assessing individuals to see if they are competent to stand trial, or are dangerous to others; or to make treatment recommendations. My typical day might consist of a parent, organization or court asking me to evaluate a child who has assaulted others, brought a gun to school or made homicidal threats. Or I might be asked to examine mitigating factors for someone who has committed a violent act. Occasionally, I might see someone for therapy who has been having homicidal thoughts. I try not to work with more than a few clients a week because of the stress, and I spend a great deal of time on each case. This is my day job.

My other main interest is in helping lay people in society understand more about the psychological and environmental conditions that might make the violent tendencies in kids worse. Anyone who works with children or has them knows that there is some genetic component to how aggressive or non-aggressive kids can be. But genetics does not explain the whole story of why certain kids become violent. I am interested in the societal systems and the environment that interact with certain disturbed kids to produce a killer. I have seen first-hand in my work what happens when the various societal systems we have in place fail to protect society. These systems include mental health facilities, criminal justice and educational systems, and the changing attitudes of our communities in dealing with kids who are aggressive. My reason for making the documentary, Six, was to explore one case study of six young murderers as a way to help the public understand not only the world of violent youth but the systems that failed to take notice of the warning signs until it was too late. I bankrolled the documentary myself because I believed it was important to tell the story of the Lillelid murder in a way that graphically demonstrates the failures of the various systems and institutions we rely on to deal with those troubled teens- failures that led to the death of innocents. It is only by understanding these systems that we can work towards solutions in the area of juvenile violence.
